BACKGROUND: Wiki!

PERSONALITY:

Dr. Alphys is introduced as the nerdy and shy reclusive scientist who assists the main character through the various puzzles and dangers around the area that houses her lab. Though she stutters her way through a rather awkward method of helping said protagonist (in the midst of erratic status updates and fawning over anime), it is valuable help nonetheless. Why would someone so hidden away from the world help a human child through such perils? Why is she hidden away to begin with?

Long before meeting a certain human that changes the world of monsters for the better, Alphys had been a highly-regarded Royal Scientist, someone who actually managed to give a robot a soul, someone who could help the monsters' king find a way to study souls and the power borne from them in order to escape their world. Through her research, she came across a power known as "Determination", something so powerful, it ended up saving the lives of dying and dead monsters. However, the success came with consequence. The monsters she had injected with Determination could not survive as intended, the bodies soon merging into horrible amalgamations called... well, Amalgamates.

These fused creatures, made up of bodies that Alphys had promised to return to their families, became both a scientific failure and a great sense of moral guilt for the doctor, and she locked them away in her secret lab to hide her shame. Not only was she devastated, but she was absolutely fearful of the consequences of their loved ones finding out what had become of their bodies. This fear turned into self-loathing so deep, that she wanted to hole herself away from anyone she could hurt or be hurt by, and it is heavily implied that she is depressed and even suicidal from what her experiments had wrought.

So, why help a human child? Honestly, she admits it's something to make her feel better. It's something to make her feel like she can actually work to make things for the better. After all, she... might have actually activated some of those puzzles and dangers so that she could intervene. But her heart was in the right place! After all, she was inspired by the human's plight from the very beginning of their journey (as she watched them from the safety of her own lab by way of a complex and remote camera system)! The end justifies the means, right?

That common belief aside, like many scientists, Alphys works with a purpose. She is very enthusiastic and very focused on the task at hand, no matter what is in front of her. Due to her long period of isolation and being alone with her thoughts, however, a lot of her interests are forms of escapism... namely that of the internet, social media, and human anime. While at face value, Alphys' love of updating statuses, taking pictures of trash cans only to add cutesy filters and say that they're pictures of her, and arguing about which seasons were inferior to others may have people brush the doctor off as someone who is just your typical nerd, we know that these are her ways of coping with her sadness.

As socially awkward as she comes off, Alphys is actually in very good company when it comes to people who like her. Before becoming a big name scientist, she had two close friends named Bratty and Catty who regard her fondly when the protagonist finds them-- they even go so far as to remembering her the "big sister" type! King Asgore himself certainly held her in high enough regard to be impressed by her skill. Mettaton, her "robot with a soul" holds no ill will against her, and they know each other's habits and quirks very well. Even the knightly and powerful Undyne has taken quite the liking to her passionate and analytical nature.

In the true ending of the game itself, we find that Alphys and Undyne actually do have a mutual attraction to one another, and when feelings are out and in the open, Undyne strives to help Alphys become happy with who she is, assuring her that she doesn't have to lie to anyone anymore. Sure, her help is in the form of a very enthusiastic skeleton, but the effort is there, and the good doctor manages to find herself love and acceptance from the other monsters, and above all else, a happy ending sealed with a kiss.

ABILITIES: While it can be argued that she may some powers outside of "SCIENCE!", due to some small little shows of lightning bolts and such during one of the final fights, we never get any solid information as to what that actually is, so I will choose to play her with no other abilities outside of just being a reptilian monster with a penchant for technology and all things nerdy.

WRITING SAMPLES.
NETWORK SAMPLE: Goop goop (w/overflow): four comments & seven+ comments.
LOG SAMPLE: Awkward blobs: ten+ comments.

** For the network sample, I know that people think their thoughts onto the network, but I feel like Alphys would be the type to think her typing style into existence just to maintain the quirky way of typing she utilizes in social media.
